Sunflower arrives in Europe from North America in the 16th century and is first cultivated in Spain. In the 19th century, sunflower seed has become the main oilseed crop in Russia, and it is third most important seed after soybeans and rapeseed nowadays. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), sunflower fields in the world exceed 100 million hectares.
Russia, The People’s Republic of China, Australia, Ukraine and France are the largest producers of sunflower seeds.
White sunflower is not very popular compared to the other sorts, although that changes rapidly, as white sunflower seeds are characterized with excellent flavor, high nutritional value (around 580 kcal per 100 grams) and a variety of beneficial substances in the kernel. Raw sunflower seeds are rich in minerals, vitamins and fatty acids which are essential for strengthening the organism and processes in it.
